Claire Bertschinger
Head of Tropical Nursing, Former Nurse for the International Red Cross
Claire Bertschinger was the young nurse whoinspired Band Aidand subsequently Live Aid, the biggest relief programme ever mounted, after appearing in the 1984 BBC report from Ethiopia surrounded by 85,000 starving people

Claire went on to accumulate vast experience from many years working in emergency disaster relief, primarily in war zones, with the International Committeeof the Red Cross (ICRC). Since retiring from full time field work, she has trained other medical professionals to work in resource poor settings and continually sought to raise awareness of the key issues in global public health. Claire has been awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal and was honoured for her inspirational nursing career with the Woman of the Year – Window to the World Award and the Human Rights and Nursing Award. In 2010 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Claire now works at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as Assistant Professor and Director for the Diploma in Tropical Nursing.[/expand]
What she offers you Claire’s main theme is that “we can and must transcend our differences, and make humanity, not economics, our highest priority in life”. She decided that with her life experiences so far, she could show the world that an ordinary person can overcome educational, emotional and physical difficulties and still make a difference to our planet. Claire continues her extraordinary work in presentations and lectures far and wide in Europe.[/expand]
